In the event of a flood, here are a few things you can do to minimize your damage:

• Try to identify where the water is coming from and, if at all possible, stop it.
  

• Turn off all electrical appliances in the area of the water.
  

• Remove or elevate any furniture that may be in contact with the water.
  

• Empty all closet floors in the area.
  

• Be careful of sagging ceilings.
  

• Do not rip up the carpet. Wait for a professional.
  

• Remove any paper products like books or newspapers.
  

• Do not attempt to dry the area with an electric heater. This can cause damage to the padding underneath the carpet.
  

• Do not turn the heat up in an attempt to dry the carpet. This will expedite the growth of mildew.
